The number of doulas working in Australia has increased over the years, but there are still areas of the country where it may be hard to find one. Be aware that there are no specific qualifications needed to call yourself a doula – anyone can be one. So find out what experience and training a doula has before you agree to hire her.

Doulas are usually experienced mums, but not all doulas have children and not all doulas are women. Their role is to support you during labour and the birth of your baby, whether you give birth at home, in a birth centre or at hospital. Doulas may also support you for the first days and weeks after your baby is born.

Pregnancy, birth, and parenting are one of life’s greatest journeys.

I became pregnant with my first baby whilst living on the west coast of Australia when all my family and friends were back home on the east coast. When pregnant with a second baby, at home, and surrounded by loved ones, I still felt something was missing. I wanted to laugh and enjoy being with family and friends, not be leaning on them.

I believe that having a doula with informative information, unwavering support, trust, and respect for your wishes, leads to more fulfilment and joy in your birth and post-partum journey.
